This software package comes on a CDROM that includes versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader and Microsoft WORD for displaying the documentation (manual is included on the CDROM). BMP images files for each page of the manual are also included. This is a full (not just a demo) MSDOS product (will run in an MSDOS window with Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista).
DSD is menu-driven and interactively sizes air duct systems using the static-regain, constant-velocity, or equal-friction methods of ASHRAE, either independently or together.
O Calculates pressure required at blower and the drop in each section and path.
O Handles round, rectangular, and oval ducts with variable roughness; galvanized, fiberglass, or flexduct.
O Allows mixed use of the three sizing methods: static regain for trunks and main branches, and equal friction for runouts (for example).
O Altitude and humidity corrected.
O Calculates path and section drops as inputs are made; sizes of sections and settings of dampers may be reviewed and changed so as to balance the path drops during the design process.
O Prints out losses (in detail) for straight sections and for each fitting, and prints out a list of duct and fitting requirements.
O Handles exhaust as well as blowing applications.
DSD includes a data file for automatically calculating fitting losses for a full range of 100+ ASHRAE-listed fittings (used for heating, cooling, ventilation, and dust removal applications in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings). It also accepts unlisted fittings according to equivalent lengths, C-factor, or direct pressure drops.
showing duct paths, sections, air flows, velocities, pressure, and pressure drops individually. DSD also prints a schedule of fittings and duct sections required for the job. Job files may be saved to disk for future reference and editing (deletion, addition, shifting around, etc.).
DSD uses English units. A 65-page manual (on disk) is included.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS FOR AIR DUCT DESIGN PROGRAM
DYNACOMP is offering a powerful upgrade of its long- popular air duct design program for microcomputers. The software offers features not usually found on microcomputer engineering programs, including the latest in input screens with pop-up windows, cursor control, use of arrows, function keys and "escape" from any position in the program.
All inputs are fully error-checked by the program, with error messages and full recovery from almost any situation. Prompts are clear and logical and "help" messages are available from any cursor position. The 80 help messages, which vary from a sentence to several screen pages, give most of the information in the program manual, making reference to it almost unnecessary.
The program automatically sets itself up for color or monochrome monitors. The new program follows the methods of the 1985 ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals. The calculation of fittings is greatly facilitated, since the program automatically calls up the necessary data for all 100-plus "standard" fittings listed in ASHRAE Fundamentals (and in SMACNA 15D) and prompts for such special inputs as bend angle, outlet area or branch flow that may be required to automatically calculate the "C- factor" for each.
DUCT DESIGN faithfully calculates C-factors, interpolating the C-factor tables of the ASHRAE Fundamentals handbook. The program is "smart" enough to reject many fitting misapplications and erroneous inputs. Up to six fittings are allowed in each duct section. Fittings may be input with or without screens, perforated plates or orifices.
Obstructions and depressions in duct sections may also be entered. Butterfly, gate, airfoil blade and parallel blade dampers are accepted and settings may be adjusted so as to approximately balance the system during the design stage. Fittings with extractors, splitter vanes, branch dampers and other devices are accepted. In addition to the ASHRAE and HMMACNA fittings for which entries are automated, the program accepts unlimited entry of other devices and fittings by equivalent feet, direct drop or `"C-factors" . The program calculates the pressure drop of each section and its fittings in `"real time" as it is entered, and automatically sizes the duct.
Calculations are altitude-, temperature- and humidity-corrected. Factors which occasionally change during system design such as duct shape, roughness or the designer's desired friction rate, may be altered at any time by the use of function keys which pop-up windows for these purposes. The user may enter standards for seldom-changed factors to avoid frequent reentry.
Function keys are used to call up help messages and call up windows to display lists and detailed descriptions of "standard" fittings.
Job files are kept on disk with all inputs and outputs. Inputs and outputs in the job file are readable by many CAD programs, Lotus and similar spreadsheet and graphics programs so that the user may use the outputs within his CAD program or develop graphs and charts as he wishes.
This version of DUCT DESIGN calculates exhaust as well as air distribution systems, a feature not found in many duct design programs. The program accepts up to 1000 duct sections if a hard disk is used, arranged in up to 200 paths. DUCT DESIGN displays or prints a complete duct section-by-section tabular print out of the job showing pressure drops and absolute pressures and permits change and immediate recalculation to eliminate unusual sizes and to arrive at a better balance for the system. Dampers in the system may be "adjusted" within the program so as to explore system balancing possibilities during the design stage. The program prints a schedule of fittings and duct pieces required by the job, sorted by size, for costing and fabrication purposes.
