Precision Cast Iron Straight Edge
This listing is for a used / vintage Brown & Sharpe Cast Iron Straight Edge. I was told this was / is used to check the ways or machine beds.
Brown & Sharpe Cast Iron Straing Edges have deep I-beam cstoss section, one flange serving as the "backbone", the other as a testing surface. This provides great strenght and vertical ribs further stiffen the web. As straight edges usually are placed on the work surface, and must be handled for this purpose, cored holes are placed in the web to lighten it without sacrificing strength. The web itself decreases in height as it approaches the ends, reducing the weight further.
Wooden blocks, carefully positioned, are provided for hand grips so the the straight edges can be manipulated without being distorted from the effect of the heat of the workman's hands. Blocks serve, also, as supports when the straight edges are not in use.
Measurements of this particular item:
2 wooden blocks to serve as handles
has a wooden cover to protect the scraped surface, with 4 pegs to keep it fastened
Weight: 22 pounds ... very heavy!!
In raised letters across the top, it reads: Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co., Providence, R.I., Made in the USA
I have owned this for over 10 years but now it is time to let it go.
This Straight edge is not only a piece of history since it is not made anymore nor is anything like it, but it has been well preserved.
When found it was lightly glass beaded to take off light surface rust and non precision cast iron was conversion coated so it will never rust again with gempler's black to preserve the cast iron.
This unit has no cracks or chips in it but will need to be scraped back into precision for use.
This is a fine vintage usable tool. Not many survived.
