Did I tell you that I love microcontrollers? Well I do, Mostly because I remember having to wire together a microprocessor, ram and rom, a watchdog supervisor, and i/o devices. If my board wasen't to packed by then and I hadent wasted 4 months in the process, I might just be able to put something else besides the "brains" on it. What a pain in the ___ that was! And always power hungry too. That's why I love microcontrollers so much. Anything and everything can have it's own little 1 chip brain! Nanowatt technology to boot. You can almost power them by blowing on them (I would at least recommend a battery however). Throw away the 555s! Stomp on the Schmidt triggers and inflexable logic solutions that can cause real problems if you decide that you want to make your project do something a little different.
The Microchip PIC 16F87 is a nice little controller. It has a flash rewriteable memory which you can easily program via socket or icsp (that's what I like). This model has self modifiable memory like the larger F877 which means that you can program this and debug your code via rs232 once you have a bootloader installed on the chip. These are new fresh units. The price listed is for 1 PIC 16F87. Complete data for the device can be found here: http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/30487c.pdf
The Pic16F87 features among other things:
368 Bytes of SRAM & 256 Bytes of EEProm
