Crane hydraulic fluid flow control valve military

This hydraulic fluid flow control valve was removed from an electric over hydraulic lifting machine for a military X-ray unit that was in perfect working condition. Both sides are marked the same with "40M 3/8 CRANE 125" and an arrow. The arrow indicates direction of free flow, opposite direction is restricted. 3/8 is for 3/8" threaded pipe. I assume Crane is the manufacturer but I don't know what 40M and 125 indicate. Main body is made of very heavy malleable steel with valve access made of brass and square headed steel (needle?). I am not familiar with this type of hydraulic valve and didn't take it apart, therefore the stainless filter screen inside could use a cleaning. 3 1/4" long x 2 3/4" wide x 1 1/2" thick; 1# actual weight.
