New Improved VersionYou've seen them used on TV and in the movies, and you've probably seen them used by banks and security personel... Incredibly handy devices that everyone should have at least one of:
Compact hand held units that combines a powerful Ultra Violet Black Light generator with a bright white torch (flashlight). A perfect size to have with you wherever you go. And this is the much improved new model - strong, reliable, and featuring a diffuser lens to distribute UV from the the bright 4000 milliwatt fluorescent tube.
Blacklight has thousands of uses of course, some fun, and many more practical, with just a few starter ideas referred to further down the page.
Fluorescent tubes produce blacklight far more efficiently than any other sourceThe UV radiation emitted by this unit is what is commonly referred to as "Blacklight blue" - 100% safe UV-A longwave radiation in the region of 400nm-315nm. It's safe to look at, and will not contribute anything towards a suntan. UV-A is the the stuff that makes things glow - and shows things you don't see under normal lighting.
It's a very strong little unit, with the UV generator or torch functions easily selected by a three position slide switch (UV/Off/Flashlight). The high UV output is achieved by the use of an internally generated high voltage source to drive a UV black light fluorescent tube (a far better source of UV than either incandescent bulbs or LEDs).
Detailled resourses fully describing the uses of Black Light are numerous, and easy to find, both on and off the web... so I'll just give a few brief examples here to get you started...
* Make white and fluorescent colours glow like mad
* Combine with a UV active "invisible pen" (I sell them too!) to write secret messages to friends that no-one else can read
* Be a hit at parties, raves, dances etc that you attend
* Use on fluorescent posters and objects - they'll jump at you!
* Paint stuff with UV active paints (available other listings) and watch the result
* Use one to reveal invisible/hidden blacklight chalk pictures in a chalkart demonstration
* Of course can be used as a standard torch as well
Notice invisible thread in genuine US note, UV active serial number on genuine Australian note
* Use with a UV active "invisible ink" pen to secretly ID mark your possessions (Click on a link to my other listings to access those)
* Check that currency is genuine and not counterfeit (see photo)
* Perfect for security staff at nightclubs to check "door hand stamps" etc.
* Use on carpet, clothing, fabrics and other surfaces to check for urine and, um, other biological stains that can't be seen by the naked eye
* Glass collectors can use to check authenticity of Uranium Glass, Vaseline glass, and some other antique glass etc. etc.
* Use to detect Rodent contamination
* Use as a guide to dating paper - pre WWII paper rarely fluoresces, post approx 1950 paper generally will fluoresce brightly
* Porcelain and ceramic collectors can use to date and detect repairs etc.
* Electronics enthusiasts can use to examine complete PCBs for faults (Note- this wavelength NOT suitable for erasing EPROMs etc)
* Blacklight can be useful in detecting some bacteria (Note- detection only, this wavelength will not kill bacteria)
* May also be useful to detect Ringworm and other fungal infections
* In engineering fields adding fluoresent dyes that become visible under these lights can aid in finding leaks etc.
* Many minerals (eg Opal, Fluorite) react strongly to blacklight, making identification far easier
* Stamp collectors can use to see normally invisible phosphorescent or fluorescent tagging on stamps, or to detect repairs
* May also be useful in diagnosis of certain medical situations (only under qualified direction, advice or supervision) - Psoriasis, Seasonal Affective Disorder, etc., and will also show UV active medical dyes
* Many breeds of Scorpion and other insects become much easier to see using blacklight
* Very useful for lice detection
* Useful for certain forensic applications - Abby from NCIS would know what to do!
* Of course can be used as a standard torch as well
You can't still be thinking you don't need at least one!
