One of the most neglected areas of maintenance on most machine tools is the felt wipers that keep the ways of the machine clean of grit and contaminants. It is also one of the most important to the life expectancy of your pride and joy. Metal shavings, swarf, and grinder dust wear the precision surfaces, and greatly affect the accuracy of your work. While most good machine tool dealers can supply you with factory made wipers, they are expensive, and have a limited life span. Heres your chance to have enough higher quality industrial felt to fashion your own replacements. Theres enough here to make two; maybe three sets, (depending on your machine) at a fraction of the cost of the factory parts (if they're available).
This 95% wool industrial felt has the most desirable properties of high capillarity (for wicking lubricants), Shore hardness range of 30-40 (for good compressibility, and wear), and excellent chemical and solvent resistance. This stuff is THE BEST industrial felt available today.
I have discs of this felt installed in the Gits oilers on my South Bend Lathe as oil filters, to keep grit and swarf out of the reserviors. I've put a dab of Flitz Polish on scrap pieces and used them as polishing pads. It has literally hundreds of uses from vibration dampening, to lubricating wicks, to piano hammer pads and cabinet drawer bumpers. It fashions to your exact needs with ease, and cuts effortlessly with a standard razor blade or Exacto knife.
