We have one rule about desoldering surface mount components with a vacuum tool or "solder sucker".........Don't. Leave them for the through-hole parts if you must have and use one. Actually we find solder wick works better there as well.
Really, the least damaging way to remove an SMT part is with a hot air rework station, followed by clean-up of the pads (and leads if replacing with a previously soldered part) with solder wick. Minimal heat and pressure should be used on the solder wick to prevent loosening or lifting pads and your iron should always be tinned and cleaned prior to using the solder wick in order to maximize heat transfer.
We don't recommend trying to re-use smt passive parts like resistors and capacitors unless it is your dead last one. Removing them usually damages or loosens the contact bond to the part and success is iffy. These are fractional cent to few cent parts and you must consider what your time is worth to troubleshoot a circuit that is not working due to an intermittent 1 cent part you saved.
This is copper desoldering braid. 1/16" (2 mm) wide x 4.9 ft. (1.5 m) long. Packed in a covered spool.
